Mohawk Paper is predominantly used in each journal - and this paper loves the pen. At 40 lbs, text weight with a smooth eggshell finish, this paper is a delight to the hand. In some cases, other types of paper are used in JRadford journals. Vintage maps, sheet music and old recipes may find their way into some journals and are used to create visual interest. A blank journal, with the creamy beauty of the paper, can be hard to overcome, so the addition of quirky papers makes the journal fun and gives each client a way to connect with the journal. Any journals can be made with lined pages as a journal or with blank pages as a sketchbook.
Long stitch binding is beautifully executed with a leather cover; and leather plays a big role in each piece. Only full grain, high quality leather is used for JRadford journals. As a regular practice, the artists craves a challenge and is inspired to use old wood, 45 rpm records and vintage bingo cards as journal covers. (*Hoarding tendencies have paid off in the use of skeleton keys, vintage jewelry and funky buttons in a journal’s closure.)
The primary binding method used is long stitch, which sews pages directly to a cover, creating a beautiful pattern on the spine of the journal. Coptic and Medieval style bindings are also used in some original works. These binding styles are ideal as they allow for the journal to lie flat when open.
The artist welcomes and is open to commissions! Unique journals have a place in commemorating birthdays, anniversaries and special trips/adventures. JRadford can even incorporate special photos and emails onto the journal pages and create pockets to save cards and keepsakes. Several of the artist’s one-of-a-kind commissions have accompanied their travel companions overseas.
